Why Install a Fence?

Posted by Ashley VanderWall

Building a fence on your property has plenty of benefits - it can provide privacy, add security, and enhance curb appeal. But don't take our word for it. We recently surveyed homeowners across America, asking them why they install a fence.

According to a survey of homeowners across the country, the top two reasons for installing a fence are:

  1. Privacy
  2. Keeping children and/or pets in the yard.

Which makes sense, as 86% of homeowners surveyed have installed or plan to install either a Privacy or Semi-Privacy fence. Privacy and Semi-Privacy fence styles can function as both a visual barrier to allow for privacy, and a physical barrier to contain children and/or pets safely in the yard.

Other reasons homeowners install a fence include:

  • Security/Safety
  • Keeping people or animals out of the yard
  • Blocking the view of neighboring properties
  • Defining property lines

Are you planning to install a fence for one of these reasons? Wondering which type of fence to get?

Here's a brief guide to help you determine which fence style best meets your needs.

Looking for Privacy?

If a desire for privacy is compelling you to build a fence, we recommend a 6 ft. tall fence in either a Privacy or Semi-Privacy fence style. There is a wide variety of both wood and vinyl fence options in these categories. Some of the most popular are:

  • Traditional Dog Ear Privacy Fence
  • Board on Board Privacy Fence
  • Horizontal Semi-Privacy Fence
  • Shadowbox Semi-Privacy Fence
  • Lattice Top Semi-Privacy Fence
  • Vinyl Privacy Fence

The above styles are also effective options for adding security, keeping people or animals out of your yard, blocking neighboring properties, and defining property lines.

Want to keep your children and/or pets in your yard?

If enclosing your yard for the safety of children or pets is your main priority, you could opt for any of the Privacy styles above or choose a Spaced Picket option. Again, there are several styles that will meet your need, available in both wood and vinyl. Here are a few popular ones:

  • Vinyl Spaced Picket Fence
  • Concave Spaced Picket Fence
  • French Gothic Spaced Picket Fence
  • Wood and Wire Fence
  • Short Dog Ear Privacy Fence

The above styles are also good options for keeping people or animals out of your yard and defining property lines.
